FAQ - Sewing Machines

The best beginner sewing machine is simple to set up and forgiving to use: easy threading, a drop-in bobbin, a small set of reliable built-in stitches, adjustable stitch length and speed control. Mechanical machines are the easiest to learn on because settings are set with dials. Entry-level computerized machines add automatic needle threading and one-touch stitch selection if you prefer buttons.

A mechanical machine uses dials and levers to choose stitches and settings, which makes it simple, durable and easy to repair. A computerized machine uses buttons or a touchscreen and adds more built-in stitches, automatic needle threading, stitch memory, an LCD display and often automatic tension. Choose mechanical for straightforward sewing; choose computerized for more stitch variety, precision and convenience.

A quilting machine needs a wide workspace to the right of the needle (throat space), because large quilts must pass through it. Look for a walking foot or built-in even feed, a quarter-inch piecing foot, adjustable speed, a needle-down function and a wide extension table. Free-motion quilting also needs a darning foot and feed dogs that can be lowered.

For garments and alterations, choose a machine with a good range of utility stitches, several buttonhole styles, adjustable presser foot pressure and a free arm for sleeves and cuffs. A stretch stitch helps with knits. For mending, a free arm and reverse stitch make patches, hems and zipper repairs much easier.

Many can handle denim and canvas with the right setup: a denim or jeans needle (90/14 to 100/16), strong polyester thread, a longer stitch and slow speed. Heavy duty machines have a stronger motor and metal frame for thick layers. Leather needs a leather needle and a suitable presser foot. Check your manual for the machine's maximum fabric thickness.

A higher stitch count is not always better. Most sewing is done with straight, zigzag, stretch and buttonhole stitches. More built-in stitches add decorative options, alphabets and specialty stitches that suit crafts and home decor. Beginners are often well served by 10 to 30 useful stitches, while experienced sewers may want more decorative choice.

Most machines include a few presser feet, bobbins, needles, a seam ripper, a power cord and foot control, and a manual. Premium models add a hard cover, an extension table and extra feet. Contents vary by model, so check the product description. Extra feet, needles and bobbins are available in the sewing accessories collection.

Yes, for light to medium projects such as hemming, crafts, costumes and small garments. Compact machines are lighter and easier to store and transport, but they usually have less power and a smaller workspace than full-size models. If you sew thick fabrics, quilts or large items regularly, a full-size or heavy duty model is the better choice.
